Legislative Action Committee
The Legislative Action Committee involves increasing cooperative regional networking and partner of South Central Kentucky funding and legislative efforts and is handled by a task force of the Board of Directors, Vice President for Property Development & Public Policy Marc Elliott and Program Director Lindsey Moyers. Announcements are made throughout the legislative sessions as needed.
2010 Legislative Agenda
The Legislative Action Committee is currently soliciting issue proposals for its 2010 legislative agenda. Upon approval by the Board of Directors, this list of requested legislative actions regarding business and economic development will be sent to our State and Federal legislators for their consideration.
The Chamber requests our Chamber partners' assistance regarding suggestions for legislative proposals to benefit business and economic development in the South Central Kentucky Region. If you have legislation you would like to propose, you may do so by completing and submitting a
proposal form to the Legislative Action Committee by October 23rd. Proposals may be submitted to
marc@bgchamber.com.
The Chamber's
Guiding Principles, which have been adopted by the Legislative Action Committee and the Chamber Board of Directors, will be used in the review of the suggested legislative proposals.
Grassroots Network
The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce's Grassroots Network is a winning team, comprised of members who help identify the concerns and needs of the business community and then communicate them to elected officials. The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce's Grassroots Network could be the most important team you join this year.
At the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, our job is to communicate the interests of our members on broad-based issues affecting the business climate. We can't do it without your help. Every day, somewhere in the local, state or federal government, an issue is being discussed and a decision is being made that affects your business. When you join the Chamber, you move from spectator to player.
The Grassroots Network ensures that the business community speaks with a unified voice, and it ensures that General Assembly listens. When you join the Chamber's Grassroots Network, you become a member of the team that identifies and develops business issues, receives regular reports and calls to action on legislative issues, communicates individually and collectively with members of the General Assembly, Congress and regulatory agencies, and participates in activities that demonstrate the strength of the business community.
Candidate Meet and Greets
Candidate Meet & Greets are held during election years to give Chamber partners an avenue to learn more about candidates running for elected office. Each candidate is introduced so that attendees know who each person is and what office they are running for. Candidate Meet & Greets are a program of the Legislative Action Committee.
Legislative Forums and Updates
The Legislative Action Committee coordinates Legislative Forums and Updates to educate the Chamber partnership on the happenings in the legislative world.
Legislative Forums are held throughout the year and vary on topics. Some are election forums held to educate the public on candidates running for office. Other forums are dedicated to certain topics such as health care or personnel issues.
Legislative Updates are held at the end of each state legislative session. The Legislative Updates give attendees a chance to hear about certain issues and bills that will affect South Central Kentucky. Attendees also have the opportunity to ask questions of the legislators unscripted.
South Central Kentucky Night
South Central Kentucky Night is a legislative reception held in Frankfort, Ky., during the long legislative session (even numbered years). All Kentucky legislative delegates are invited to attend along with South Central Kentucky regional partners.
South Central Kentucky Night gives our regional partners a chance to meet one-on-one with our state legislators. Attendees can talk politics or simply get to know their legislators while enjoying food, drinks and live music by a string quartet.
South Central Kentucky Washington DC Fly-in
The South Central Kentucky Washington, DC Fly-in is an annual event in June where partners travel to our nation's capital to meet with our senators and congressmen. This three-day, two-night trip includes meetings with Kentucky's congressional delegation and Cabinet secretaries.
Hotel accommodations, meal and travel arrangements once in Washington, DC are all coordinated for each attendee. Participants are given the opportunity to meet with our nation's policy makers and share their ideas and needs for South Central Kentucky.
For more information on participating in the Fly-in, contact Program Director
Lindsey Moyers.
