Commission on Economic Opportunity /Weinberg Regional Food Warehouse:

Serves Luzerne, Lackawanna, Wyoming and Susquehanna counties.

CEO established a regional food bank, an affiliate of Feeding America. Since its inception in 1997, member agencies have grown from 18 to 115, operating programs at 170 different sites, distributing more than 5 million pounds of food, and private, food industry donors have grown from 65 to 161.

The Summer Food Service Program serves 13,000 meals and snacks each year to needy children.

CEO operates a Weatherization Assistance Program, the third largest in the state. Available to both homeowners and renters, services include an energy audit, air sealing, insulation, home heating system tune-ups, ventilation fans, energy efficient lighting and other cost effective energy-saving measures.

From 1999 through 2006, the federal Department of Energy designated CEO as Pennsylvania's Million Solar Roof Partner, serving as the lead organization developing markets for solar energy programs, .

Through the state Department of Public Welfare, CEO is one of six nonprofit organizations statewide operating the LIHEAP Crisis program assisting low-income families with grants to pay for heating costs in crisis situations, assisting over 3,000 families annually.

The Housing Development Corporation of NEPA, a private, nonprofit organization incorporated in 1984, has extensive experience in developing and managing affordable housing. Specific projects include:

Pine Street Neighborhood: 26 new homebuyer opportunities in a formerly distressed neighborhood in the city of Hazleton.

St. Gabriel House, Hazleton: The $1.8 million restoration and conversion of the former convent that now houses 14 apartments and two offices.

Former Schain Department Store, Berwick: The $2.1 million historic restoration and conversion of a former Sears and Roebuck department store offers 24 rental units and three commercial spaces.

Former Florence Hotel, Scranton: The $4.2 million restoration and conversion of this former hotel into 30 rental units.

Townhomes at Hanover I and II: Developed 75 mixed-income units in a $6.4 million new construction development in Hanover Township.

Developed over 800 scattered site units of affordable housing in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

McGowan Scholarships: Annual award to approximately 45 academically talented, economically disadvantaged Luzerne and Wyoming County high school graduates

Annually sponsors a 16-hour preparation course for the SAT I for economically disadvantaged high school juniors.

Legislative analysis on issues related to human services, seniors, housing, energy, food and nutrition.

GRIT, Inc./Washington Square Apartments

Owns and operates a 167-unit apartment building in the city of Wilkes-Barre housing more than 300 senior citizen tenants.

Provides property management, tenant services and social activities.
